New Standards for regulators and Accredited Registers come into effect today

01 Jul 2026

The Professional Standards Authority’s new Standards for regulators and Accredited Registers, which were published in March, come into effect today.

The new Standards mark an important step in the development of professional regulation across health and social care. They set out what good regulation looks like in a changing environment, and what the public should be able to expect from organisations responsible for overseeing health and care professionals and practitioners. The Standards have been updated following extensive review and engagement with stakeholders. They reflect the challenges facing regulation today, including changes in technology, workforce pressures, increasing public expectations, and the need for regulation to be transparent, proportionate and focused on public protection.

We will start assessing the regulators and Accredited Registers against the new Standards from today. Find out more about the new Standards, including supporting guidance.
