Welcome to this edition of The Standard

We have published our short report

Reshaping regulation for public protectionWe set out our views on the Health and Care Bill and call for public protection to be at the heart of any decisions about reform. Whatever option the Government decides to take forward, it must ensure that change is made for the right reason – keeping people safe.

We have had a bit of a gap since our last newsletter, though we were in touch with you earlier in the summer about the Government's consultation on reforming regulation.

This time last year, we reported on the start of our project looking at equality, diversity and inclusion both internally but also in the wider regulatory world. The initial phase resulted in an audit and now an action plan. You can find out more, including details of the appointment of an EDI adviser to help us take this work forward, in our recent blog: Black History Month - what difference has a year made?

What happens next in our performance review 'review'? We published the report outlining the results of our consultation, but we are now following this up with a further consultation to get your feedback on our more detailed proposals. How did Social Work England meet the Standards of Good Regulation in their first performance review? We have also been busy checking and then appealing final fitness to practise decisions - find out  more about recent cases in our appeals update.

Why does sorry seem to be so hard to say? We held our second seminar on the duty of candour. This was a well-attended virtual event discussing Putting candour into practice: how is it working and what more can be done? We have also recently published our short report outlining our views on the implications for professional regulation in the Government's Health and Care Bill. Have you missed any of our recent research reports? There is a helpful round-up just in case.

Since our last update, we have launched a new ‘public interest test’ for accreditation decisions. We took this step following a strategic review of the programme, and strong support during our public consultation to taking greater account of the effectiveness of treatments offered by those on the voluntary registers that we accredit. We are also assessing six new applications for accreditation, and working with the Disclosure and Barring Service to enhance safeguarding arrangements.

Have you missed any of our blogs? Catch up here - recent blogs have looked at racial discrimination in healthcare regulation and oversight as well as a guest blog looking at child and adolescent psychotherapy to mark World Mental Health Day.

A round-up about regulators' consultations and reports recently published. We are also continuing to give details and links to regulators' Covid-19-related website hubs which include the latest updates, information and advice for registrants, students, employers and the public.
