Welcome to this edition of The Standard

Take the opportunity to read a final Viewpoint from Harry in which he reflects on his work at the Authority and the qualities he thinks underlie the contribution of the Authority to public protection.

On 19 September the Authority’s Chair, George Jenkins, hosted an event at which we marked the achievements of our Chief Executive, Harry Cayton CBE, during his 11 years at the Authority. The atmosphere reflected Harry himself, lively, energetic, full of interesting discussion and good humour. We give special thanks to our speakers, Sir Liam Donaldson, Fenella Morris QC and Irwin Fefergrad and to our guests for making it a memorable occasion.

The event provided the opportunity for past colleagues and staff of the Authority to catch up, including former Chairs Rosie Varley and Baroness Jill Pitkeathley. It was also a chance for so many people connected to improving public protection and patient safety to swap stories and network. Attendees came from all four UK nations, but also further afield from Australia and Canada. Read Harry's viewpoint where he outlines the key qualities he believes are necessary to succeed in professional regulation.

Are the numbers of final fitness to practise decisions in decline? What does this mean and is there a reason for it? We also have our usual updates, including on our latest fitness to practise learning digest and the most recent regulator performance reviews we have published.

It is eight years since we published the first version of Right-touch regulation how far has its influence spread? Ten international contributors tell us in our latest publication setting out the varied ways in which they have applied its principles to their particular problems and challenges. Also 'What is it to be a good regulator?' We have just announced the theme, and academic lead, for our 2019 Conference.

We have accredited our 26th Register the UK Association for Humanistic Psychology Practitioners is the latest register to achieve accreditation. Have you missed any of our recent blogs about the Accredited Registers programme? If so, we have included some quick links through to them.

The viewpoint has been revived for a special one-off viewpoint from Harry Cayton he reflects on his 11 years at the Authority and also ponders what key qualities are vital to be successful in the regulatory field.
