We were hoping that by the time we sent this out this newsletter, the circumstances would be improved from our last update (sent out in June). Unfortunately, it doesn't look like things are going to change too much for the better any time soon, so we hope you are all keeping safe and that 2021 will be a better year.

October was Black History Month - to mark the month, we published two blogs which discuss how regulation, regulators and the Authority itself all need to take action to promote equality, diversity and inclusion and note that it shouldn't take one month a year to highlight it. You can find these blogs on our website here. This week we are hosting our annual symposium. We will be discussing how regulation can support the current/future workforce, but are also asking the question: 'Is regulation too white?' You can find out more about the symposium in the research and policy section and we'll provide a more detailed update in our next newsletter.

Though some regulators have reverted to holding in-person fitness to practise panel hearings, it looks like virtual hearings will be here to stay for a while. Following a consultation, we recently published guidance for regulators on this topic. There's also an update on performance reviews, including recent reports published and our plan to to review potential options for the approach we take to reviewing the regulators.

We recently published two research reports: one looking at public and professional perspectives on future fitness to practise processes where hearings are not held; the other reviewing professional regulation since 2011. We held a seminar on candour and whistleblowing in the context of Covid-19. Though online, we were still able to have a lively debate - all of which will feed into a follow-up seminar planned for next summer.

In this issue, we provide an update on the Strategic Review of the programme. Since the last e-newsletter, we’ve been busy looking at what makes schemes of voluntary assurance effective and seeing how the programme measures up. Following our September Board meeting, the next step is to engage with key stakeholders.
