We are pleased to announce the appointment of Caroline Corby as the Authority’s new Chair. The appointment was made by the Privy Council and Caroline will take up her post on 1 February 2021. She will succeed Antony Townsend who has been the Interim Chair of the Authority since September 2020 and who will continue as a member of the Board.
Caroline is currently the Chair of the Parole Board for England and Wales, and the Chair of One Housing. Caroline is also a Board Member at Cafcass and a Panel Chair for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC); she will be stepping down from the Cafcass and NMC posts when she takes up her role at the Authority. Caroline has extensive previous experience in non-executive roles and on the fitness to practise committees of regulators.
Caroline will be the Chair of the Authority’s Board which sets our strategic direction, approves our annual business plan and budget, and monitors our performance.
Caroline Corby said:

The Authority plays a vital role in protecting the public by raising standards in the registration and regulation of people working in health and social care. The challenges in the health sector have never been greater and I hope to be able to bring my previous experience in leadership to benefit patients and the public.’

Notes to the editor
- The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care oversees 10 statutory bodies that regulate health and social care professionals in the UK.
- We assess their performance and report to Parliament. We also conduct audits and investigations and can appeal fitness to practise cases to the courts if we consider that sanctions are insufficient to protect the public and it is in the public interest.
- The Standards of Good Regulation are designed to ensure that the regulators are protecting the public but also promoting confidence in health and care professionals and themselves. The Standards cover the regulators’ four core functions: setting and promoting guidance and standards for the profession; setting standards for and quality assuring the provision of education and training; maintaining a register of professionals; and taking action where a professional’s fitness to practise may be impaired. There is also a set of General Standards.
- We also set standards for organisations holding voluntary registers for health and social care occupations and accredit those that meet them.
- We share good practice and knowledge, conduct research and introduce new ideas to our sector. We monitor policy developments in the UK and internationally and provide advice on issues relating to professional standards in health and social care.
- We do this to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of users of health and social care services and the public. We are an independent body, accountable to the UK Parliament.
