The Authority welcomes three new Board members

The Authority welcomes three new Board members to replace outgoing members who finished their term at the end of December 2016.

The Board leads the Authority’s work – setting our strategic direction and approving our annual business plan and budget. Our three new Board members are:

  • Moi Ali is an experienced non-executive director and chair and is currently a Board Member on the Scottish Police Authority, the Scottish Ambulance Service and Education Scotland
  • Frances Done CBE is a Chartered Accountant whose career has spanned public, private and third sectors and she is currently Vice Chair of the Birmingham Independent Improvement Panel. Frances Done will chair the Authority’s Audit and Risk Committee
  • Dr Tom Frawley CBE has had a long career in public service starting out in 1971 as a Graduate Trainee for the National Health Service and culminating with his appointment as the Northern Ireland Ombudsman.

All three bring with them a wealth of experience and expertise from their various fields. Harry Cayton, Chief Executive, welcomed the new members, ‘I am really pleased that we have been able to appoint such high-calibre candidates. Their backgrounds and specialist knowledge will prove invaluable in what is promising to be a very interesting time for health and care regulation.’

Notes to the Editor

  1. The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (previously known as the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence) oversees nine statutory bodies that regulate health and social care professionals in the UK.
  2. We assess their performance and report to Parliament. We also conduct audits and investigations and can appeal fitness to practise cases to the courts if we consider that sanctions are unduly lenient and it is in the public interest.
  3. We also set standards for organisations holding voluntary registers for health and social care occupations and accredit those that meet them.
  4. We share good practice and knowledge, conduct research and introduce new ideas to our sector. We monitor policy developments in the UK and internationally and provide advice on issues relating to professional standards in health and social care.
  5. We do this to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of users of health and social care services and the public. We are an independent body, accountable to the UK Parliament.
  6. The Authority’s Board are responsible for determining the overall policies that affect the way we carry out our business. They set our strategic direction and approval our annual business plan and budget. Our Board have different skills and backgrounds. They are not health or care professionals because the legislation under which we were set up does not allow anyone who has been a member of a profession that is regulated to sit on our Board.
