In May/June 2014 we audited the General Dental Council’s (GDC) handling of 100 cases closed at the initial stages of its FTP process during the period 1 November 2013 to 30 April 2014.
We found weaknesses or areas for improvement in 94 of the 100 cases that we audited, including 22 cases where we had significant concerns. The issues identified included:
- Failure to seek sufficient information or evidence
- Concerns about aspects of decisions made to close cases and in five cases we were unable to agree that the closure decision was appropriate
- Inadequate customer care and poor internal complaints handling
- Delays in acknowledging receipt of complaints and delays in progressing cases.
We have made a number of recommendations in the report. As part of our 2014/2015 Performance Review process we will follow up on the improvements that the GDC has informed us it has made.
