Accredited registers update

About Accredited Registers

Registers renewing accreditation

We are pleased to announce that the Association of Christian Counsellors, British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, Human Givens Institute, Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists, Society of Homeopaths and UK Public Health Register have recently successfully renewed accreditation.

We ask all registers to renew annually – this means we can ensure that they continue to meet the Standards. We publish our decisions, which are available here.

We held a seminar on 2 April, focusing on the theme of risk. We had a range of speakers including colleagues from Play Therapy UK, British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and Society of Homeopaths as well as David Bradly, legal counsel at 36 Essex Chambers and Denham Phipps from the Manchester University. Denham is a Lecturer in Patient Safety at the  University’s School of Health Sciences. Following his talk at the seminar, Denham has provided a guest blog on the topic of human factors. You can read it here.

How clued up are you on the risks of cosmetic procedure? A new DHSC campaign aims to raise awareness

The Department of Health and Social Care has launched an awareness campaign and issued new government advice setting out the questions people should ask before agreeing to treatment. If you’re considering treatment, why not take a few moments to read their top tips?

Two accredited registers, the JCCP and Save Face, register practitioners that offer cosmetic interventions, and we recommend that the public use practitioners that are either regulated health professionals or registered with an Accredited Register. Use our Check-a-practitioner tool to check.

Find out more about cosmetic procedures from the NHS website or follow #clueduponcosmetictrprocedures to keep updated.

Safeguarding

At our seminar on 2 April, we discussed safeguarding and relevant legislation.

The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1976 and the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 and Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 as they currently stand restrict the accredited registers’ access to information that would help them to assess the risks posed by practitioners to the public.

We have already raised this in our Annual Reports since 2015/16 and with the Department of Health and Social Care. This year, we will work to raise awareness of this gap with key stakeholders and interested parties, making a case for the legislation to be amended

NHS Scotland

We will be attending the NHS Scotland event later this month, where we will have a stand. We look forward to discussing the programme and its benefits with attendees.
