Hypnotherapy on the horizon? Read our 8 top tips

massage therapy

Hypnotherapy, alongside other complementary therapies, is becoming ever more popular. If you are considering having hypnotherapy, are you sure you've done your homework with regards to the practitioner who is treating you?

Did you know that hypnotherapists are not regulated by law in the UK? Unlike doctors, nurses, dentists and many other healthcare practitioners, they are not overseen by a professional body unless they choose to register with one. So, what does this mean for you? In simple terms, it means that it's up to you to check who is treating you because there are no guarantees that someone else is doing it for you.

Is your hypnotherapist trained appropriately? Do they have insurance which covers you in case of an accident? What happens if you want to make a complaint?

How do you find the answers to these (and other questions)? Well, that’s where the Accredited Registers programme can help you out. Find or Check a Practitioner >

Accredited Registers exists to help you choose from a list of practitioners who have been thoroughly vetted. You can also be assured that everyone on one of the registers must:

  • Sign up to a code of ethics/conduct
  • Be insured to practise
  • Have appropriate training and qualifications for the treatments they offer
  • Demonstrate that they are continually learning and updating their skills and knowledge (also known as CPD)

8 ways to check who's treating you:

1: Choose a reputable therapist

1-Accredited-Register

We suggest you always choose a practitioner from one of our Accredited Registers.

2: Ask as many questions as you like

4-before-and-after-photos

We encourage you to ask your therapist a few questions about their background and training to find out what you need to know.

3: Is hypnotherapy right for me?

3-take-your-time

Don’t let anyone make you feel like you have to commit to something on the spot. Take your time to do your homework thoroughly.

4: Consider booking a consultation prior to your treatment

7-follow-up

A consultation is a good way to get a feel for the treatment. Reputable therapists are happy to offer consultations and if they're not, steer clear.

5: On medication? Always check with your GP first

2-consultation

Complementary therapies are not intended to replace conventional medicine. If you have any concerns, check with your GP.

6: Does the treatment room look and feel professional?

8-keep-it-clinical

If your therapist's premises aren't clean and professional, don't feel pressured into receiving treatment. Expect high standards.

7: Got concerns? Don't be afraid to speak up

5-take-notes

If you feel uncomfortable at any point, say something. All practitioners on Accredited Registers sign up to a code of conduct.

8: Know your rights

All Accredited Registers have a complaints process and all practitioners must have insurance in place to cover you if something goes wrong.
